Owen Bird Hosts Donation Breakfast in Support of Disability Alliance B.C.

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (“IDPS”) took place on December 3. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992 with the aim of promoting an understanding of disability issues and mobilizing support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day aims to promote the importance of inclusion in life and the workplace of persons with both visible and invisible disabilities. Owen Bird Welcomes Harleen Randhawa

Owen Bird is pleased to announce that Harleen Randhawa has joined our firm as the newest member of our Litigation Group. Harleen obtained her J.D. and M.B.A. at the University of Victoria, and her B.Com (Hons.) from the University of British Columbia.

Prior to joining Owen Bird, Harleen developed a diverse litigation and dispute resolution practice at one of Canada’s business law firms in Vancouver. She has experience with contract disputes, employment disputes, class action litigation, product liability claims, tort claims, privacy and data breach issues, as well as litigation considerations for corporate transactions.

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

September 30th is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (“TRCC”) Call to Action 80:

80. We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Dan Coles Authors Liquor Licensing Chapter for CLEBC

Owen Bird shareholder Dan Coles has authored a new chapter on Liquor Licence Due Diligence for the Continuing Legal Education Society of B.C.’s Due Diligence Deskbook. The 2022 print edition of the publication is scheduled for release today, Sept. 21st!

The new chapter covers the key legislation, policy, and due diligence procedure for transactions involving liquor licences in B.C., whether a lawyer’s client is looking to enter the hospitality sector, acquire an existing licence along with premises such as a restaurant or bar, or investigate the licensed establishments operating in a target commercial property.

Owen Bird is delighted to announce that Jean Feng has joined our firm as the newest member of our Real Estate Group.

Before graduating from Peter A. Allard School of Law, Jean obtained her Bachelor of Laws from East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai, followed by a Master in Laws from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, winning many academic awards.

Jean regularly advises clients on corporate, commercial, real estate, estate planning and administration matters. She advised clients in corporate governance, business transaction and dispute resolution matters in China before she started her law practice in Canada.

National Indigenous History Month

In celebration of National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day, a team of our lawyers and staff set out last Friday to learn more about the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. We took a cultural canoe tour of Burrard Inlet put on by Takaya Tours. We had a wonderful time and would like to thank our cultural guide Les for sharing his knowledge with us and our helmsperson Andrew for keeping us safe on the water. Thank you both!

Owen Bird Welcomes Lily Zhang

Lily Zhang joined Owen Bird as a litigation associate in January 2022 after clerking at the BC Supreme Court and articling at Owen Bird. She is developing a broad litigation practice including insurance law, insurance defence, commercial litigation, construction law, and family law. Lily has appeared in the BC Provincial Court and Supreme Court as well as administrative tribunals. Lily is a member of the Owen Bird Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Involvement Committee. She is fluent in Mandarin.
